Helltaker is a free game from the creator of Awaria, a puzzle indie video game by vanripper with music by Mittsies.
In this game, you descend into Hell with one simple goal: build your ultimate demon girl harem. But like, it's really PG. I swear. No really, I'm not being defensive. IM BEING HONEST, BELIEVE ME!
Helltaker combines tight, challenging puzzle gameplay with visual novel style storytelling, a stylish art direction, and a very catchy soundtrack from Mittsies. Each level pushes your logic skills as you think your way through traps and obstacles in Sokoban style puzzles. Because going to hell wasn't difficult enough.
Later levels include a more action paced boss fight that was a departure from the Sokoban style. And it was really good. What truly sets Helltaker apart is its iconic art style. From the sharp character designs to the minimalist but expressive backgrounds, every detail oozes personality. The demons, ranging from cute and charming to bossy and chaotic, quickly became fan favorites, inspiring massive amounts of fan art, cosplay, and community love.
There were plenty of times in this game I said... "I feel kinda guilty that this was free and I am this entertained." There is even a fully fledged out DLC included called EXAMTAKER that you could miss if you quit out after beating Helltaker.
Yes, the game is short, but for a free indie title, the quality and polish are impressive. Helltaker provides a lot of value. The only negatives I can think of is that the story, while charming, is pretty shallow. Let's be real. This game was mostly a way for the artist to mainstream their... tastes at the time. And, it worked.
